Top-up Technology

Mixergy’s top-up technology exploits thermal stratification (the process of water rising when it heats) to ‘float’ hot water on top of cold to enable users to selectively heat different volumes of water.

The time taken to heat any portion of water is a function of the desired temperature, quantity of heat input and quantity of water to be heated. This quantity of time is directly proportional to the number of litres being heated i.e. if you heat twice as many litres it will take twice as long to heat if the desired temperature and quantity of heat input are unchanged. As the Mixergy tank is able to heat water selectively, the reheat performance can be improved. For electric systems, the minimum amount that can be heated from cold is 20% or less, meaning the system can heat at least 5x faster. For standard indirect systems, the minimum amount that can be heated from cold is 40% or less, meaning the system can heat at least 2.5x faster.

Novel Inlet Diffuser

The Mixergy hot water tank makes use of a novel inlet diffuser which reduces mixing as water is drawn from the cylinder and replaced with cold (mains) water. The thermal plot to the right illustrates how the inlet diffuser lessens mixing between the incoming cold water and the remaining hot water.

By maintaining a good separation between the hot and cold water, the Mixergy tank is able to store up to 30% more hot water when compared to a cylinder which doesn’t feature a diffuser (NPL accredited).
