What is Mixergy Flex?

It’s the feature that decides when your cylinder heats your water, choosing times when electricity is cheaper and cleaner. It used to be called autoschedule.

From September 2026, it does something more: when your cylinder shifts its heating to help the electricity network, that flexibility is worth money, and homes that qualify can get a share of the money.

Why will autoschedule change its name?

Because now it does more than optimise your schedule. It has the same features and settings, but with a new name, and a way for your cylinder to earn if your home qualifies.

How do I join, and do I need to do anything?

If you’re already using autoschedule, it’s automatically renamed to Mixergy Flex and nothing about your hot water changes. Simply update your app when prompted, and follow on the on-screen instructions. To be considered for the Flex Reward earnings, you home will also need to meet certain eligibility criteria.

How does my cylinder earn money?

The people who run the electricity network need to match how much power is being made with how much is being used. A cylinder that can heat water a bit earlier or a bit later helps them do that, and they pay for that help. We sell your cylinder’s flexibility into the energy markets, and a share for your home is credited to you.

How much will I get?

Anywhere from £0 to £250 a year, based on our modelling. What you actually get depends on your cylinder, how much hot water you use and when, where you live, and what’s happening in the energy markets. It won’t be the same every month or year, and we can’t promise you a figure. If your eligible, from November the app will show you what your cylinder is earning.

When do I start earning, and when will I see it?

If you’ve signed up and your home meets the criteria, your cylinder starts building rewards straight away. You won’t see whether you qualify, or anything you’ve built up, until the Flex Rewards wallet launches in the app in November. From that date the app shows your status and everything you’ve earned since you joined.

When can I take the money out?

From November, once you’ve added your bank details in the app. Anything you’ve built up before then comes out with the rest.

How do I get paid?

By bank transfer to a UK bank account in your own name, once you’ve earned a minimum of £10. You choose whether to take it every month or let it build up.

Am I guaranteed to be paid?

No. The money comes from the energy markets, not from Mixergy, so we don’t promise any payment or any amount and we’re not liable if payments don’t come through.

The app says I haven’t earned anything. Why?

Being in the scheme isn’t the same as being called on. It depends on your cylinder and how it’s set up, your smart meter, where you live, and what the energy markets are doing. Some of the programmes we take part in only pay when your cylinder actually shifts your electricity use, measured against what you’d normally have used.

Will this make my energy bill go up?

It shouldn’t. Your cylinder heats when electricity is cheapest, which is what autoschedule always did, so if anything it works in your favour. Your rewards are separate from your bill and come to you by bank transfer, not as a discount from your supplier.

Who qualifies for payments?

All of the following need to be true at the same time.

• You’re 18 or over and live in England, Scotland or Wales.
• You pay the electricity bill for your home, or the person who does has said you can sign up.
• You own your Mixergy cylinder, or whoever owns it is happy for you to join.
• You have a working smart meter that’s been sending your readings automatically for at least the last month.
• Your cylinder is connected to the internet with Mixergy Flex switched on and you’ve opted in.
• And you’re not already in another scheme that pays you to shift when you use electricity.

These criteria only affect whether you earn rewards — anyone who joins Mixergy Flex can use the automatic scheduling straight away, whether or not they qualify for payments.

Do I qualify if I’m on a smart tariff like Octopus Go or Agile?

Flex Rewards works with any tariff, including time of use tariffs like Octopus Go and Agile, and the only thing that stops you joining is if your cylinder is already enrolled in another scheme that pays you for controlling it.

How do I know if my home qualifies?

You won’t know until Flex Rewards wallet launches in November, and whether you see earnings in it.

My home doesn’t qualify. Am I still building up money?

No. Nothing builds up for you while your home doesn’t meet the criteria, and nothing is owed to you for that time, though your cylinder keeps using Mixergy Flex to heat at the cheapest times. You stay enrolled, so if things change you start earning from that point without having to do anything.

What’s the most common reason a home doesn’t qualify?

The smart meter. Payments are worked out from your half hourly electricity readings, so we need a meter that’s sending those readings automatically. If yours isn’t, your energy supplier can usually sort it out with a phone call.

I don’t have a smart meter. Can I still join?

Yes, you can still use Mixergy Flex to heat at the cheapest times. You just won’t earn rewards without a working smart meter. Your energy supplier can arrange one.

I rent my home. Can I take part?

Yes, if you pay the electricity bill and have the full authority from the owner of asset. The money goes to whoever pays the electricity bill, so in most rented homes that’s you, not your landlord. Please check with your landlord if you are unsure.

I live in Northern Ireland. Can I join?

Not at the moment. The scheme covers England, Scotland and Wales.

Will I run out of hot water?

No. Your cylinder knows how much hot water it’s holding and how hot it is, right down to the litre, so it works around your routine rather than the other way round. Your schedule and comfort settings always come first.

Will I notice anything different in my water heating?

You shouldn’t. There’s nothing to switch on and no alerts to respond to. The adjustments are short and they happen in the background.

Can I still choose when my water heats?

Yes. Your settings in the app are yours, and Mixergy Flex works within them.

What if I need extra hot water unexpectedly?

Boost it in the app as you always have. Nothing about that changes.

Can I turn Mixergy Flex off?

Yes, at any time in the app. Turning Flex off pauses your automatic scheduling and moves you to a manual schedule that you set yourself. Any rewards you’ve built up stop growing while it’s off. What you’ve already earned is safe, and you can turn Flex back on whenever you like.

Can I Leave the Mixergy Flex scheme?

Yes. Leaving Flex withdraws your consent to the scheme altogether and turns off your automatic scheduling. You’ll lose any rewards you’ve accrued but not yet had paid out.

What happens to money I’ve already earned if I leave?

If you leave Flex (rather than just turning it off), you’ll lose any rewards that haven’t already been paid out to your bank account. If you think you might want to leave, withdraw your balance first if you can.

I’m moving house. What do I do?

You’ll need to leave Mixergy Flex before you move, since your consent to share meter readings is tied to your address and can’t transfer with you. Withdraw any balance you can beforehand, because leaving means anything you haven’t withdrawn is lost. Whoever moves in can sign up in their own name.

I’m changing energy supplier. Does that matter?

Switching supplier is fine. Just keep an eye on the app afterwards, because if your new supplier doesn’t keep your smart meter sending readings automatically, your home may stop qualifying until that’s fixed.

Can you remove me from the scheme?

We can, and the terms will set out why. The reason will be if your go offline, your smart meter stops sending readings, you move house, or you stop meeting the criteria.

What information do you use?

Your half hourly electricity readings, and data from your cylinder such as how much energy it used, water temperature, how full it is and when it heated. We also use your address, email and the reference number that identifies your electricity supply. Our full terms will set out exactly what data we share and for what purpose once its live.

Who sees it?

Our partner Axle Energy, and the organisations that run the electricity network programmes, who need it to register your home, check your cylinder did what it was paid for, and work out what you’re owed. Our privacy notice and terms will have the full details of how we share your data. 

Can I change my mind about sharing it?

Turning Flex off pauses things but keeps your data-sharing consent in place. To withdraw consent altogether you’ll need to leave Flex, which also ends your part in the scheme and, as above, means losing any rewards you haven’t already had paid out.
