Havebury Housing reduces their oil consumption by up to 73% with Mixergy
Havebury Housing Association, based in Bury St. Edmunds, manages around 7,000 homes across East Anglia. With many of their residents among the most vulnerable in society, Havebury is actively investing in decarbonizing their housing stock to help lower energy costs while reducing carbon emissions.
In one of their homes, the residents, Ann and her husband, faced high energy consumption due to the use of electric showers, and an oil boiler. With solar PV already installed, a furtherefficient solution was needed—one that would help transition away from oil while accommodating the future electrification of their home.
The Solution: Mixergy Hot Water Cylinder
Havebury Housing selected Mixergy as the ideal solution for modernizing their hot water system. Mixergy’s technology works seamlessly with existing setups, including solar PV and oil boilers. The Mixergy hot water cylinder comes with an embedded solar diverter that allows excess solar energy, which would normally be sent back to the grid, to be stored and used for heating water. This feature effectively turns the hot water cylinder into a battery.
The system also supports the oil boiler, ensuring hot water is available when solar PV is insufficient.
Significant Benefits for Residents
In addition to the installation of a Mixergy hot water cylinder, Havebury replaced the electric showers with mixer showers. This upgrade has already resulted in major improvements in energy efficiency and the residents’ daily lives.
We don’t need to do anything. I just press one button to heat the water if there’s no solar. The hot water is always available when we need it, and since the installation, we haven’t had to refill the oil for summer at all. It’s brilliant.
Ann, Resident
Energy Savings and Reduced Oil Consumption
The Mixergy system integrates smoothly with other home devices, including EV chargers, only using excess solar energy when other devices aren’t drawing power. This has led to significant savings of up to a 73% reduction their oil use.
When there’s excess solar, it now heats the tank. Since installation, the oil boiler has been off for 115 days out of 159. From April to mid-September, we’ve reduced oil consumption by up to 73%.

A Future-Ready, Energy-Efficient Solution Made for Residents
Mixergy is dedicated to partnering with social housing providers on their decarbonisation journey. Our cylinders are designed to be future-proof for the net-zero transition and are officially recognised in Appendix Q for offering significant RdSAP uplifts.
However, technology alone isn’t enough to achieve this transition; it’s crucial to involve residents in the process.
Mixergy’s remote diagnostics provide social housing providers with full visibility of their cylinder fleet. The auto-cleansing cycles, which work seamlessly with heating schedules, make it easier and more efficient to care for residents.
James Elms, from Havebury Housing Partnerships, emphasized the importance of providing solutions for vulnerable residents.
We need to ensure our residents live comfortably and affordably. With Mixergy, we can offer a proactive, energy-efficient solution that makes the most of solar PV while phasing out oil. Replacing electric showers also prepares us for the Future Homes Standard, which may penalize inefficient systems. It’s been great working with Mixergy, and our usual contractors were able to carry out the installation seamlessly. Our residents are benefiting from safer, more sustainable homes.
