Generating your own solar energy gives you greater energy independence, saves money on your bills, and reduces your carbon emissions.

The Mixergy tank works with solar PV or solar thermal systems, enabling you to efficiently store the energy that you have generated through the solar panels on your roof.

And Mixergy’s unique approach to volumetric heating – only heating what you need – ensures that you can use more of your free solar energy.

And when the sun is not shining, you can still be sure that you will always have the hot water you need.

Mixergy makes the most of your solar

On sunny days, when you know there will be lots of surplus solar energy generation, you can schedule your boiler, heat pump or immersion to heat just a small volume of water in the morning – enough to get you through the morning showers and washing up. This leaves the larger proportion of the tank available to be heated with free solar energy – either from solar thermal collectors or a solar PV array.

On less sunny days, a Mixergy tank is able to use even short bursts of solar energy to produce usable hot water – just heating the water you need to reach a useful hot water temperature much more quickly with less heat losses.

… and why conventional tanks do not!

Conventional tanks can only heat 100% of their total volume. So on a sunny morning, there is minimal water available to be heated from solar energy throughout the day.

And on less sunny days, your solar energy is dumped into the whole volume of water, typically just pre-eating the bottom of the tank rather than providing a useful temperature for a hot shower, bath or washing up!

Don’t waste your solar energy – choose Mixergy!

Solar PV

If you have a solar photovoltaic (PV) system there will be times during the day when your solar panels are generating more energy than you can use. This excess is automatically exported to the National Grid.

With a Mixergy tank, you can divert any excess solar electricity to the immersion heater in your tank, enabling you to heat your water with free, clean solar energy.

The Mixergy PV Embedded Diverter

This is a cylinder-mounted, integrated PV diverter that uses a wired ethernet connection to a grid current sensor (known as a CT clamp) which monitors your solar power generation and automatically diverts the excess to your Mixergy tank using the immersion.

Due to the requirement for a wired connection, the embedded diverter is often the neatest and most cost-effective solution for a new-build property.

The Mixergy PV Switch

This allows you to connect your Mixergy tank to a third-party PV diverter, such as a Solar iBoost or myenergi eddi. The PV switch enables the PV diverter to direct excess solar power to the tank using the immersion. Then, whenever the Mixergy controller calls for heat through the immersion, control of the immersion is switched away from the PV diverter to the Mixergy controller.

The PV switch offers greater flexibility, and can easily be fitted to an existing or new solar PV system at any point during the lifetime of your Mixergy tank.

Mixergy tank and solar PV

SAP benefits for new and existing homes

Using a Mixergy tank and solar PV has been confirmed to provide significant benefits through the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP), the UK Government’s methodology to assess the energy and environmental performance of homes.

Mixergy is the only tank recognised in SAP that can lower carbon and running costs when combined with solar PV.

Solar Thermal

Mixergy tanks are also available to work with solar thermal (or solar water heating) collectors which provide a hugely efficient way to use energy from the sun to heat water for storage in the tank.

A typical system should provide around 90% of your hot water requirements, dropping to around 25% in the winter.

The Mixergy Solar Thermal Tank

As a solar thermal system will not provide 100% of the hot water you need throughout the year, the difference is made up by the main source of heat to the home, such as a boiler, heat pump, or immersion heater.

The Mixergy solar thermal tank uses a dedicated heating coil located at the bottom of the tank where it can transfer as much heat as possible during the summer months and can even take advantage of low-grade winter heat.

Along with the additional heating coil, the Mixergy solar thermal tank offers all the benefits that you would expect from a Mixergy tank including top-up heating of just the water you need, faster heating, and smart controls. You can also connect your solar thermal tank to solar PV to make even greater use of free solar energy.
