I heat my water with a gas boiler. Can I take part?
You can switch Flex on to keep the automatic scheduling, which heats only what you need and cuts the gas you use. The rewards come from shifting when your tank uses electricity, so if your tank is heated by gas there’s no electric heating to shift and it won’t earn rewards for now. Nothing about how it heats changes. If you add electric heating later, your tank can start earning from then.
Should I switch my tank to electric to earn rewards?
No, not just for the rewards. Rewards are a share of what your tank’s flexibility earns in the energy markets, and they’re unlikely to cover the difference between gas and peak-rate electricity. Only heat with electricity if it’s already the cheaper option for you, for example on a cheap overnight rate or with spare solar. If it is, Flex will heat in those hours and any rewards come on top.
Can I take part and only use electricity when it’s free or during an event?
Not at the moment. Flex works with the heat source you’ve set in the app and doesn’t switch between gas and electricity on its own. If that changes, we’ll let you know in the app.
My tank is heated by a heat pump. Does Flex work with it?
Yes. Flex schedules your heat pump around your routine and your tariff in the same way it does for an immersion heater. Because a heat pump uses electricity, your tank can earn rewards as long as your home meets the criteria above.
I have solar panels or a home battery. Can I take part, and will Flex drain my battery?
Yes, you can take part. Flex earns by holding heating back when the grid is stretched, not by switching your tank on at short notice, so it won’t call on your battery or push you into peak-rate electricity for an event. Your tank carries on using spare solar when it’s available, and if you divert solar to the tank today that continues as before.
I’m on a fixed tariff with a cheaper night rate. Will Flex heat at my day rate?
Flex heats in the cheap hours you’ve entered in the app, the same way automatic scheduling always has, so on a day and night tariff it aims for your night rate. It won’t deliberately move heating into your day rate to earn a reward. Any rewards come on top of the saving, so there’s nothing to lose by switching it on.
My tank isn’t heating in my off-peak times. Should I switch to a manual schedule?
You don’t need to. Mixergy Flex works out your heating times from your tariff details and how you use hot water, and it can take up to two weeks to settle into your routine. Check that the off-peak times saved in the app match your tariff, and give it time to learn. You can switch to a manual schedule if you’d rather set fixed times yourself, but your tank won’t be eligible to earn Flex rewards while it’s on manual.
