10 Point Plan & Green Revolution

November 19, 2020

At Mixergy we welcome the announcement of the Prime Minister’s 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution and fully support putting the energy transition at the heart of the UK’s national recovery plans. We are particularly focused on playing a lead role in developing and delivering solutions that can drive forward the decarbonisation of heat in homes.

Bringing forward the date by which new homes will no longer have natural gas heating to 2023 is good news in making sure we don’t continue installing heating systems which will give a negative carbon legacy for the next 15 years or more. We also applaud the target to install 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028, and look forward to seeing the details of policy and funding that can make this ambition a reality. The extension of the Green Homes Grant to 2022 makes sense but needs to be followed up by a longer term stimulus and support package to address the challenges of existing housing stock.

We would like to see more emphasis on flexible energy storage technologies – like Mixergy smart hot water tanks – which are able to exploit low cost renewable generation alongside legacy heating equipment.

Finally, we urge the government to push ahead in 2021 with the long-awaited updates to building regulations for the relatively easy to tackle new build housing, followed swiftly by the early implementation of an ambitious Future Homes Standard.

This is undoubtedly a big moment for the UK’s net-zero journey and there is much to do! Contact us to find out more how Mixergy’s solutions will make a difference.
