Are Local Authorities and Housing Associations stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to their decarbonisation choices?
Hydrogen boilers and electrification of heat through heat pumps are competing technologies and both want to be the silver bullet to meet all our decarbonisation needs. This reminds me of the war between Blueray and HD DVD in the late 2000s. I was one of many that stood back and waited to see which horse won the battle.
But Local Authorities and Housing Associations don’t have that luxury to wait and see which technology wins the decarbonisation battle as they have targets to bring their housing stock up to an EPC rating of B by 2040!
So what happens if they invest heavily in heat pumps today and then must replace them at a future date with a hydrogen boiler?
This is where adaptive heating technology can play its role. Whilst we are still not sure whether hydrogen or heat pumps will be the future for our heat source, we can make a hot water choice that is future-proof.
Using a Mixergy smart cylinder and our adaptive heating technology, one cylinder can be used with four different heat sources. Direct electric, gas/oil or hydrogen boiler, solar PV, and all tanks are heat pump ready. You can install a cylinder today with a heat pump and add a hydrogen boiler in 15 years’ time without having to spend more money replacing the hot water cylinder as well.
This gives LAs and HAs the ability to standardise their heating systems and make them future-proof for any heat source as we move towards becoming net-zero by 2050.
